A Visual Pub Crawl

Wander along the streets of the town of Lancaster and not only are there many pubs but you are never in any doubt of what they are called. This, the Duke of Lancaster with his crown, is possibly meant to be the 14th Century John of Gaunt, a Plantagenet and brother to the Black Prince.  Lancaster lies on the River Lune
and this sign is a wonderful recreation of the 18th Century St Georges Quay and its warehousing along the banks  Of course if there are ports and ships there must be sailors
and they are rather fond of pubs.

    I like it when you can trace a pub's name through history (instead of the fake names we make up to make them seem Olde English)

    Much more elegant than our neon Bar or Lounge signs. The establishments are probably more elegant too.

    Gosh Joy, a pub crawl this morning -- and I haven't even had my coffee yet!

    One of the books in my new favorite series (Peculiar Crimes Unit Mysteries by C. Fowler) the is "the Victoria Vanishes" -- it is all about London pubs and some of their history. When we were in London, we had fun "collecting" pub names, which are wonderful. (We only visited the insides of a very select few ;>)!

    I very much like these pub signs, Joy. I heard somewhere that there are many less pubs in the UK than there used to be. Is that true?

    I recently started photographing pubs and there signs even though I'm teetotal - as EG Wow is learning there are a lot closing down and often it is the flashy ones rather than the seedy ones that go first.

    Yes EG as Gerald says there have been a lot of closures, high rents and a changing society are just two reasons. The ones I have shown will be safe located in Lancaster, a university town, lots of drinking students, LOL.
