Looking down from the top of Birkrigg common last week the
harvest was in full swing. The
hay baled and wrapped on the top fields, the bottom fields ready for the bailer to drive down the lines and, out of view on the left the farmers taking a breather. Its a busy time of the year and you could go anywhere in the country to see a similar scene
such as these square bales in Kent,
or journey over the water see some round ones in France waiting to be stacked

I often wonder why some bales are round and some are square - or rectangular. I once helped lifting bales as a teenager and realized how allergic I had become. It was a scary and sad moment as I love the smell of hay.

Nowadays, here, the farmers usually put the hay bales in those white covers - the kids call them "marshmellows."

An Unfittie's Guide to Adventurous Travel
Just last week, I saw photos of how the round bales are made. Interesting process since I'm more used to the rectangles. I too had a sad day as a young teen when I found I was allergic to it. I lived on a semi-working farm and had to leave when they hayed. I used to be able to take part. What a loss that was.

ReplyDeleteHere in Texas we predominantly have the rolls rather than the square bales. However, due to our drought there is little hay this year! And now we are plagued by fire!

Wow, such a stunning view! I'm from an urban country, there's so big scale farm and definitely no hay farm. It's a land-scarce island, where everything gone upward or underground.

I love this time of year with the countryside changing colour and hay bales dotted about the fields. Here in Northumberland we see both round and square bales.
